The aim of the Interreg Aurora funded project SUSEN – Knowledge and networking platform for sustainable electronics based on northern bioresources is to promote knowledge, networking and joint-actions in crossborder research and innovation, and industrial activities related to sustainable electronic materials, components and applications by combining unique regional expertise of UO, LTU and various northern companies.
The evolving trend of digitalization brings electronic materials, components and devices everywhere in our daily commodities and diversity of industrial fields. These materials and products such as electronic packages, batteries, sensors and nanomaterials are applied in plethora of smart devices such as wearables, mobilephones, electric cars, housing automation and military systems. Simultaneously, the general agenda and policies on green growth and sustainable use of resources have triggered to develop electronics based on sustainable raw materials, despite their practical applications are still scarce in the markets.
Northern companies are actively processing and developing electronics for various purposes. Moreover, the northern regions possess abundant forest resources, centered especially in the North Finland and Sweden, and there are significant ongoing and upcoming efforts to valorize the biomasses in the next generation biorefineries.
Consequently, future sustainable electronics offer appealing possibilities to create novel value chains and innovations to support sustainable growth in the North, and reduce the regional dependency on nonrenewable resources.
